As summer’s vibes start fading and fall creeps in, it’s game time to switch up your beauty routine. Just like you tweak your playlist, your skincare and makeup need a remix too. No sweat, because we’ve got your back with these 10 pro tips to help you ace the shift from summer to fall, no pumpkin spice latte required!
From hydration hacks to Autumn makeup must-haves, Pamela Friedman of CV Skinlabs offers these 10 tips for transitioning your beauty routine from summer to fall.
1. Keep that summer glow on.
If you got a healthy glow this summer, you probably hate the idea of losing it as the fall months come. Though it will fade eventually, you can keep the look by mixing in about a teaspoon of gradual self-tanner with your regular moisturizer. (CV Skinlabs Body Repair Lotion will give you a nice radiant sheen.) Apply with a mitt to protect your hands and enjoy a lasting glow.
2. Address the damage.
If the summer was a bit hard on your skin, particularly if you suffered from sun damage, it’s time to start addressing that damage. Use a topical vitamin-C product daily to boost collagen production, protect from further sun damage, and reduce skin discoloration.
3. Change up your diet.
Take advantage of foods that are in season that can benefit your skin. Apples and grapes give you damage-busting antioxidants. Pumpkin is a good source of beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A—necessary for healthy skin cells. Pomegranates help boost collagen and provide an anti-inflammatory action. Cranberries also deliver a soothing action.
4. Go through your products.
It’s time to look at your skin care and makeup products. Toss those you won’t be using through the fall, and ditch mascara that’s over 3 months old and eye shadow that’s over 6 months. This is a great time to clean all your brushes, too.
5. Prepare for the lightening effect.
If you were outside a lot this summer, you can expect your skin will gradually lighten during the fall. Be prepared with a lighter tone of concealer and foundation.
6. Get ready for the cold.
As temperatures drop, your skin is going to get dryer. Be ready with a lotion or cream moisturizer that will keep up with the changing air. I suggest our Calming Moisture as it’s rich in natural oils and extracts that keep skin looking plump and radiant.
7. Pay more attention to body skin.
You may not have worried about applying moisture to the skin on your body through the summer months, but in the fall and winter, that skin may start to feel dry and itchy. There’s less moisture in the air, so the air takes it from your skin. Start moisturizing after every shower and bath. CV Skinlabs Body Repair Lotion has fatty acids that penetrate and keep skin feeling comfortable and soft.
8. Get the humidifier going.
If you live in a dry climate, it helps to run a humidifier in your room at night. It moisturizes the air and helps keep your skin from drying out.
9. Consider a retinol product.
If you’re suffering from hyperpigmentation brought on by sun exposure (or hormones), now’s the time to focus on fading it away. Your best product for that: retinol. It helps speed up skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen production and can help reduce sun damage. Apply a little at night, either every other night or every night, depending on your skin’s level of sensitivity. If the product irritates your skin at all, try CV Skinlabs Rescue + Relief Spray for a cooling, soothing feel.
10. Don’t forget to keep protecting.
Just because the summer is over doesn’t mean the sun can’t still damage your skin. Even on cloudy days, UVA rays penetrate and break down skin structure. Continue to wear your sunscreen daily.
