“We rise by lifting others.”
At Beautify.tips, we love to shine the shine the spotlight on brave entrepreneurs who weren’t afraid to build their own brand, blaze their own trail, and be their own boss. Here are their journeys…
With a passion for empowering individuals to embrace their beauty and healing journeys, Jadis Montijo is poised to revolutionize the world of scar care. Ahead, we uncover the story behind Motivo Scar Care and the remarkable founder leading its mission.
1. Can you share the inspiration behind starting Motivo Scar Care and how your personal journey influenced the brand’s mission of inclusivity?
The inspiration came from my own frustrating experience with scar care products on the market. After my FTM transition, I had top surgery and the scar care options available did not work as well as I hoped. They wouldn’t stay on through even a bit of sweat, and just didn’t match my skin tone. I ended up needing a second surgery to fix the scarring, which was a wake-up call. I teamed up with my plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Keith, and we decided to create something better—Motivo Scar Care.
2. What types of scars can your products be used for?
Our products can be used for anything from acne to surgical scars, and they’re safe for anyone aged two and up!
3. Motivo Scar Care is celebrated for being one of the most inclusive wellness brands. What specific steps have you taken to ensure that your products cater to a diverse range of skin types and scar care needs?
First off, our scar tape comes in multiple skin tones and we’re committed to expanding this as we grow. It’s also hypoallergenic, so even folks with sensitive skin can use it. Our silicone-based topicals include natural key ingredients that help diminish scars and soothe the itching and irritation that come with them.
As a transgender founder, what unique challenges have you faced in the wellness industry, and how have you overcome them to make Motivo Scar Care a success?
Aside from being transgender, diving into a new industry was a huge challenge. My background is in the cannabis industry, so navigating the wellness space—dominated by so many strong women—was tough. But I’ve learned to carve my own path and make the impact I want to see in this space, regardless of the obstacles.
Inclusivity goes beyond product formulation. How does Motivo Scar Care address inclusivity in its marketing, community outreach, and overall brand messaging?
With Dr. Keith being a leading gender-affirming surgeon and me being a transman, inclusivity is personal for us. We want to ensure everyone feels welcome—regardless of race, background, or scar experience. We’re here to help, no matter what.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those from marginalized communities, who want to create impactful and inclusive brands in the wellness industry?
Many successful businesses were started by people who had no clue what they were doing. Believe in yourself because you’re going to need that belief when times get tough. Entrepreneurship is full of challenges, but you have to pick yourself up and keep fighting. It takes a special kind of person to see it through.
