Oh, apple cider vinegar (ACV), how do we love thee? Let us count the ways… or better yet, let’s count the ways it can amp up your beauty game. As a seasoned beauty editor, I’ve seen trends come and go, but the enduring allure of ACV in the beauty world is as steadfast as the need for a good SPF. Packed with antibacterial and antifungal properties, this pantry staple is more than just a salad dressing ingredient—it’s a mighty multi-tasker that deserves a prime spot in your beauty cabinet.

Why Apple Cider Vinegar?

ACV isn’t just a kitchen hero; it’s a beauty powerhouse. Rich in acetic acid, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals, ACV can help balance your skin’s pH, brighten your complexion, and even give your hair that TV-commercial kind of glow. But that’s just the beginning. Read on to learn all my favorite ways to use it.

As a Skin Savior

ACV’s antibacterial properties make it a fantastic natural remedy for acne and oily skin. A simple ACV toner can help regulate the production of oil, reduce inflammation, and prevent breakouts. To whip up your own, mix one part ACV with three parts water (adjust depending on your skin’s sensitivity) and apply it to the skin with a cotton ball after cleansing. Just remember, while ACV is detoxifying, it’s also quite potent, so don’t skip the patch test before you dive face-first into this treatment.

As a Hair Care Hero

Dreaming of shiny, flake-free locks? ACV can clarify and exfoliate your scalp, removing buildup from styling products and shampoo. It also smooths the hair cuticle, giving your mane a glossy finish. For an easy DIY hair rinse, mix 1/3 cup of ACV with four cups of water, and pour over your hair after shampooing. Leave it in for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This can enhance shine and reduce frizz dramatically. I like to do this treatment twice a month. I also love using PURA D’OR’s Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo clarifying and detoxifying shampoo. It really helps clarify and detox your hair from excess oil and buildup.

To Brighten Your Smile

For those who want a natural teeth whitener, ACV might just be your new best friend. Its acidic nature can help remove stains from your teeth, especially from coffee and nicotine. However, be cautious—ACV is potent and can damage enamel if used too frequently or in high concentrations. Try using it just once a week: dip your toothbrush in ACV and gently brush for a minute or two.

A Word of Caution

As magical as ACV sounds, it’s not without its warnings. Due to its high acidity, it should always be diluted before use, whether it’s for your skin, hair, or teeth. (Trust me on this one, don’t go full strength!) Undiluted ACV can cause burns or irritation. Also, if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or other chronic skin conditions, consult your dermatologist before adding ACV to your beauty regimen. You don’t want to make skin problem worse but introducing something that can potentially be irritating.

The Takeaway

Apple cider vinegar could well be the missing ingredient in your beauty routine. It’s affordable, it’s versatile, and let’s be honest—it feels a little bit like a witchy potion when you’re mixing it up. Whether you’re dabbing it on a zit to zap it overnight or rinsing your hair with it for enviable gloss, ACV is a natural remedy that actually lives up to the hype. Just remember to treat it with respect—a little goes a long way, and too much can be, well, too much.
