When it comes to discovering and trying out new beauty styles to test out over the holidays, the options are endless. From social media, but especially TikTok, we’ve seen sweet styles like “I’m Cold” makeup and “strawberry girl summer” makeup to edgier looks like “latex makeup”

But when it comes to the holiday season, there is probably no look more fitting, or adorable, than the sugar plum fairy look

@haileybieber

when I was 16 I was the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker.. this is my 2023 version of that makeup. My go to vibe for the holiday season! 🍬✨

This soft, pinky beauty trend, which we will go into detail further down into the article, went viral after Hailey Bieber posted it on her feed. The model and former ballet dancer was inspired by the makeup look she would sport while dancing as a sugar plum fairy in the ballet The Nutcracker

What is sugar plum fairy makeup?

If you’ve never had the chance to watch this iconic ballet, the sugar plum fairy surrounded by her crew of fluttering, flouncing dancers is dressed up in various shades of white and pink and has a playful, feminine energy about her.

That is essentially what the sugar plum fairy look promises the wearer, a flirty, feminine face, versus the bold, glam appearance of a bold red lip and semi-frosty eye makeup typically associated with the Christmas season.

If you are a fan of ballet-core, a fashion style strongly inspired by the tulle and satins and soft cottons associated with a ballet dancer’s warm-up wardrobe, then you will most likely be a fan of this look.

How to Get the Sugar Plum Fairy Look

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

There are two primary areas of focus with the sugar plum fairy look: A radiant glow to the skin and shimmery eye makeup, with potential of using glitter or similar embellishments to play up the eyes.

All about that (face) base

There are varying definitions of what a “sugar plum” actually is, from a regular piece of sugar candy to a sweetened fruit, but the overall vibe is sweet and playful, so you want to make sure the focus is on the makeup and not the skin with a fresh, dewy base.

Go in with a hydrating foundation like the Joah Beauty Luminous Peptide Foundation ($15.99) and Hydrating Eye Serum Conealor ($11.99), before going in with other products like a blush and highlighter.

Bonus tip, you can give the skin an even more radiant finish by going in with the Joah Beauty Luminous Skin Tint Stick ($13.99).

Once the base is down, you want to give your skin a flushed look, as if you were busy dancing with your fairy friends in a winter wonderland, with highly blushed up and slightly shiny cheeks.

With the face products, it’s best to go in with cream or liquid formulas to give the skin more of a natural feel, like the Joah Beauty Glow Liquid Highlighter ($11.99)

The makeup used for the face doesn’t necessarily have to be a bubble gum pink. As Monica showcases in the video below, there are ways to adjust the colors used to better suit those with warmer and deeper skintones.

If you are on the fairer side, like Miss Bieber, then you can go with bubble gum and cherry blossoms pinks and reds, thoroughly blended out to a pinkish hue. And for those on the deeper side of the complexion spectrum, if you’re not a fan of using these types of shades, you can get a similar vibe with a more vibrant magenta pink and purple tones.

It’s all in the eyes

If you wanted to skip doing your eye makeup to get the “sugar plum fairy” look, you totally could. But if you wanted to kick things up a notch and play with the eyeshadow palettes your besties have been gifting you this holiday season, or the ones you’ve been treating yourself to, then you can go in with the eye makeup.

With the eye makeup, there’s a bit more room for variation outside of the pink and lavender family, though those are usually the colors associated with this makeup trend. You can also go in with icy blues and purples, even better if they have a duochrome shift, and layer on a glitter liner along the upper and lower lid line, or go in with a creamy or glittery shadow all across the lid and up to the brow bone. We love this  JOAH Color Haul Eyeshadow Palette in ‘First Dance’ ($10.95), as it has every shade you need to get the Sugar Plum Fairy look in a flash.

After all, the point of the holiday season is to enjoy spending time with friends and family, exchanging gifts and sweets and sentimental words along the way. And if you can look like a radiant fairy along the way, it just makes things that much more fun and enjoyable.
