What’s the difference between GU and UNIQLO?
Ahead of GU’s store opening, I went on a 1-on-1 guided tour through all the aisles by a brand representative. One important talking point, throughout the tour, highlighted that GU and UNIQLO are definitely sisters, not twins. UNIQLO is geared towards offering more basic, everyday styles while GU’s main focus is highlighting current trends and offering soon-to-be trending fashions. “In Japan, some GU and UNIQLO stores are right next to each other,” the representative told Beautify. They went on to explain that many customers shop both stores during the same trip. That way, shoppers can grab their essentials from UNIQLO, then their stand-out pieces from GU.
About GU
GU (pronounced as the letters “G” and “U”) is more than a two-letter name, it’s “derived from the Japanese word for ‘Freedom,’” per a GU press release. Hence, the idea of finding freedom through fashion is another key theme for the fashion brand, per information given during the guided tour. While hosting a wide range of trending styles, shoppers are able to find pieces that either suit their current style or allow for them to explore new trends and collaborations.
A Collaborative Celebration with UNDERCOVER
In celebration of GU’s US launch, the Japanese fashion brand is featuring a collaboration with notable fashion brand, UNDERCOVER, titled KOSMIK/NOISE. The gender-neutral line consists of 22 styles that range from cozy ready-to-wear to versatile, convertible accessories. Plus, “the collaboration with UNDERCOVER also includes special edition collaborative pieces from the iconic film, THE WIZARD OF OZ as well as NYC exclusives such as ‘Big Apple’ graphic t-shirts and ripstop tote bags,” per the aforementioned press release.
